What if, between a movement of madness and a movement of faith, the difference lies in the implementation of concrete, effective actions on the ground?
The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
just as the bottom of the sea is covered by water.
- Habakkuk 2.14
The province of Quebec, a vast territory three times the size of France, is home to some 9 million people, compared with 68 million in France. Despite its rich Christian heritage, Quebec today boasts the lowest rate of religious attendance in Canada. According to the 2021 census, 60% of Quebecers identify themselves as Catholic, 30% as having no religious affiliation, 6.2% as belonging to other Christian denominations. 2.5% as Muslim, 0.5% as Evangelical, 0.5% as belonging to other non-Christian religions, and 0.3% as Orthodox.
Outreach Initiatives
The Réseau Évangélique du Québec (REQ) was founded in June 2013 in Montreal. Today, it brings together a dozen denominations and, since 2024, independent evangelical churches have also been able to join. At the heart of this movement, JC2033 is a small interdenominational team committed to building bridges among churches in order to live out Jesus' prayer: That all may be one (John 17.21).
JC2033 Québec's commitment takes the form of an annual sugar shack meal, prayer evenings, a three-day mini-Compostelle, a day of reflection on the Risen Jesus, ecumenical celebrations, and soon, youth evenings and unity brunches. Links with First Nations are also being developed. All these initiatives across Quebec are made possible by a dedicated team of six people who orchestrate the development and implementation of projects with passion and commitment:
-
Laurent Gerber, evangelical pastor and HUB for JC2033 Québec
-
Yves-Patrick Augustin, member of the Chemin Neuf community
-
Philippe Reichenbach, evangelical pastor and REQ administrator
-
Mathieu Binette, head of Maison de la Foi
-
Lucie Poulin, representative of the Catholic Diocese of Joliette
-
Sébastien Cloutier, representative of the Catholic Diocese of Joliette and Chairman of the Board of JC2033 Québec
Together, they embody the will to live unity in the service of Christ in Quebec.
Unity in Action
Over the past two years, magnificent meetings have been held among Catholics, Evangelicals, Orthodox and sometimes even Anglicans. JC2033 also actively supports unity projects such as Easter Dawn. Members of the Quebec group have also launched their own website, Facebook page and YouTube channel. In 2024, the Quebec group began the process of obtaining recognition as an Organisme Sans But Lucratif, a process for which we are all invited to pray.
Laurent Gerber, pastor and leader of Hub JC2033 Québec, comments: "What our Quebec team finds increasingly gratifying is the growing joy of churches uniting to bear witness together to the love of Jesus. For example, Mgr. Louis Corriveau, Bishop of Joliette, has shown concrete support by offering JC2033 an office in his bishopric. He would also like to see a JC2033 event held every year in his diocese.
Laurent concludes: "We believe that God's movement is not going to stop. The verse from Habakkuk continues to inspire us and push us forward in unity.”
