The Catholic Church, JC2033, and the Call to Walk Together Toward 2033

Vatican, May 30, 2026. During the Charis Congress, the international service of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, several presentations highlighted the importance of Christian unity and their shared witness as Easter 2033 approaches. In this context, leaders shared their conviction that this milestone represents a unique opportunity to renew the Church’s mission together.

Before an audience of more than 3,000 people gathered in the Paul VI Hall, Olivier Fleury, director of JC2033, recounted the vision he received several years ago in Sydney, Australia. There he saw great beams of light shooting up from the earth toward the heavens, as well as a multitude of believers gathered together. Asking the Lord about the meaning of this vision, he understood that it represented the people of God gathered to celebrate together the 2000thanniversary of Christ’s resurrection in 2033.

Drawing on this unforgettable experience, he issued a twofold call. The first concerns unity. Christians are invited to move forward together in order to bear credible witness to the risen Christ. The second call concerns mission. Every believer is encouraged to proclaim the Gospel in their daily surroundings—in cities and villages alike—through their words, deeds, and way of life.

In conclusion, he posed a simple question: What gift will we offer to Christ for the Jubilee of his resurrection? In his view, the finest gift would be a Church that is more united and more resolutely committed to mission.

A Discussion with Pope Leo XIV

During the audience granted to the Congress participants, Pope Leo XIV elaborated on five essential aspects of the Charismatic Renewal experience.

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit enables a personal encounter with God and stirs up the desire to bear witness to Christ.
  • Prayer of praise renews our relationship with God.
  • The Word of God becomes a living source of spiritual nourishment and discernment.
  • The Holy Spirit is also the source of communion and unity among Christians.
  • Finally, concrete charity toward the poorest demonstrates the authenticity of the Spirit’s work.

After Pope Leo XIV’s address, Olivier Fleury presented him with his book *Alors le Monde Saura* (*Then the World Will Know*).

He asked him this question, “for 2033, the two-thousandth anniversary of Christ’s resurrection, would it be possible to celebrate it together?”

In the same spirit, Martin Hoegger thanked the pope for his invitation to journey together on a “spiritual path toward 2033” and for calling on global church leaders to gather in Jerusalem during this jubilee year. By referring to Jerusalem as “the roots of our faith,” the Pope indeed emphasized the importance of returning to the apostolic sources in order to move toward an ever-deeper communion.

Ecumenical Mobilization Toward 2033

Archbishop Thomas Schirrmacher, former general secretary of the World Evangelical Alliance, emphasized that the vision of proclaiming the Gospel to the whole world by 2033 has been, from its inception, an ecumenical initiative. Among the most notable projects are JC2033, launched by Olivier Fleury in 2007, as well as various international initiatives associated with this same vision.

The World Council of Churches has publicly expressed its support for JC2033.

For its part, the global charismatic network Empowered21 launched the “EveryONE/Amsterdam2023–2033” initiative, aimed at ensuring that every person can hear the Gospel by Pentecost 2033.

The Pentecostal World Fellowship has also encouraged its member churches to fulfill the Great Commission within this timeframe.

In 2025, the World Evangelical Alliance held its General Assembly in Seoul under the theme “The Gospel for All by 2033.”

According to Schirrmacher, such a mobilization cannot be achieved without the participation of the Catholic Church. That is why he welcomes the commitment of Global 2033 and especially of Charis, which has made Agenda 2033 a major focus of its mission. He sees the Catholic Charismatic Renewal as a unique bridge between Catholics, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, and Charismatics, in the service of a common Christian witness.

Toward the “Jubilee of Redemption”

The Charis Congress highlighted a shared vision, to make the year 2033 not only a commemoration of Christ’s resurrection, but also a decisive step on the path toward unity and mission. The calls of Pope Leo XIV, the vision of Olivier Fleury, and the reflections of Thomas Schirrmacher converge.

As the “Jubilee of Redemption”—as the Catholic Church calls it—draws near, Christians are invited to walk together, to allow themselves to be renewed by the Holy Spirit, and to offer the world a common witness to the risen Christ. A more fraternal, more united, and more missionary Church would undoubtedly be the most beautiful gift to present to the Lord in 2033.
